Keyword Research in 6 Simple Steps

keyword research is the foundation of SEO

Proper Keyword Research is the foundation of a successful Website.

Where most people fail in Keyword Research is not in finding Keywords for their Niche, Anybody can do that,. It is in optimizing their keyword selection process so that the search engines drive the right traffic to their Website so that they maximize BOTH traffic AND sales!

But keep this in mind about SEO: increased sales happen only IF:

** the keywords selected bring enough traffic;

** the keywords are obtainable in SEO competition (and)

** if the keywords will actually convert –  if they actually result in increased sales and opt-in marketing sales leads.

Otherwise, keyword research is really just wasted time. Actually it is worse then that, it can sabotage your entire Website/blog efforts!!

Strategic Keyword Research to the Rescue

We can't correctly perform Search Engine Optimization for our Website without first spending time performing keyword research.

Everyone has a different idea of how to do Keyword Research and there are no end to available keyword research tools out there each with there own angle on how to properly conduct keyword research.

Some people  use WordTracker, Keyword Discovery and others use Google's Keyword Research Tool. Click on this link to see an article on the top 5 FREE keyword Research Tools

In my own practice, I started with WordTracker for my sites and for my clients. I dabbled with Google and thought it was the best thing going. Then I spent $40 for a keyword research tool and said MAN! how did I ever do proper keyword research without this!. But soon I realized that it still did not cover all of the bases! I now use keyword Research Pro. It is the best Keyword Research Software System out there. Click on this link to read a review of their latest version of Keyword Research Pro. It will blow you away and like me you will say "MAN! How did I ever get along without this"?

Since most people are familiar with Google Adword "Keyword Research tool" I am going to use it as an example for basic Strategic Keyword Research. Now that Google shows an estimated number of average monthly impressions (instead of just the old green bar), the Google tool can really help with your keyword research. If you don't have an AdWords account, you can access the tool independently (just Google: Google Keyword Research Tool).

Grabbing the Best Keywords for your Website Using Google's Keyword Research Tool

Step 1 — Put your root keyword into the tool.

I suggest one phrase at a time, 1-4 words in length.

What is a "Root Keyword"? Start with a word or short phrase that someone might use searching for your products or services. Then, click: Get Keyword ideas and wait for the results.

Another option is to click: Website Content and let Google pull suggestions from your Website content.

The idea here is to get a lot of different keyword ideas. You really are brainstorming.

Step 2 — IMPORTANT, change the Match Type to Phrase, which adds quotes to the keyword results.

This makes the tool's result most closely match organic search, ignoring the "loosey-goosey" broad match phrases for AdWords. So if you put in a 3 word phrase for your keyword research you will get back close matches to that phrase instead of to the different individual words in the overall keyword phrase.

And under the Show/Hide Columns make sure your settings display Approximate Avg Search Volume. (If you're marketing a seasonal product or service you might change to a different setting.)

Step 3 — Analyze the results of your Keyword Research so far.

What we're all trying to find is the low hanging fruit: the best balance of traffic volume, ease of search engine optimization and traffic that will likely convert. Meaning if your site is on Poker. Don't try to grab the word "Poker" as your main keyword phrase, the established, big money competition will keep you out of the top page of Google forever.

I suggest targeting phrases that are at least 5,000 to 10,000 monthly average impressions. Conversely, keyword phrases with very high monthly impressions may prove too competitive in organic search. Find the best balance for your organic optimization skills and for your industry.

If your small business marketing needs to deliver you 200,000 monthly organic impressions and you choose keyword search phrases with between 5,000 and 10,000 monthly impressions, then based on my formula you'll need between 20 to 40 keyword phrases from search engine ranking to deliver you that 200,000 monthly impressions.

Of course, as you discover opportune phrases that are offer greater monthly impressions and that you're comfortable optimizing for, that will lower the number of phrases needed to reach your monthly goal.

Finally I like to grab some keywords that have little or no competition. This builds the "long Tailed Keyword List" For your Website. Meaning that all those smaller keywords can add up and often have less competition then the keywords that have 20,000 searches a month!

Make your keyword list from this criteria. I like to copy and paste into my email program.

Lastly on this point, you'll need good click-through rate data and conversion rate data either from your site or for your industry, to determine the number of monthly impressions you'll need to shoot for.

Step 4 in your Strategic Keyword Research — Evaluate the competing number of pages in organic search from Google.

Is this a number you're comfortable optimizing for? While you're on the SERPs looking over the search results, look at the AdWords ads and the organic results.

Does your service or product sound like it belongs on this page, for this keyword? Or, does it sound out of place? And for a search phrase to be good, normally you'll want to see several AdWords ads appearing for the search phrase.Make your list from this criteria, setting aside any keyword phrases from the previous step (at least for right now) where the competition is too steep. Phrases that look good but with too much competition, save for the future.

This brings up a good point: Keep good notes! Otherwise, you'll come back for the next round of research and have to re-do things that you shouldn't have to. :-(

Step 5 — Evaluate the phrases still on your list for their likely commercial intention using the Microsoft Online Commercial Intention Tool (Google it)

.Now, this is a Microsoft tool…I use it and am glad for the data, but I don't make decisions about any keyword phrase off data from just one tool or from just one step in my process.

Having said that, I wouldn't select 15 phrases for optimization where each of them shows there's not commercial intent.

keep your list of phrases that still meet your criteria and move onto the next step.

Step 6 — Evaluate your remaining list in Google's Traffic Estimator.

What I look for is the relationship of average monthly impressions to estimated daily click throughs in AdWords. Do they make sense and suggest commercial intention?

If one Keyword research phrase has twice the monthly impressions as another, but only 1/2 the daily AdWords clicks, something may be wrong. You may want to look closer.

The goal isn't just traffic, it's traffic that converts — buys, signs up to your email list, calls or emails your company and becomes a sales lead, etc.

When you complete these Keyword Research steps, you should have whittled your initial keyword list down to the "lowest hanging fruit", the most opportune phrases (easiest to rank well in) COMBINED with the largest amount of quality traffic, COMBINED with traffic that should convert.

The Windows into Your Website

Keywords are the windows into your Website. If you target the wrong ones for your business, you won't have the traffic, sales or sales leads that you need.

If you're using an SEO Company to perform your work, make sure they do it the correct way — not the lazy way — and oversee their work. Your site, your responsibility!

If you're doing d-i-y Keyword Research, be really educated about what you're doing or your d-i-y effort could cost you more than hiring a qualified company.

NOTE: Another option available from some SEO companies today for those watching their budget is to function as a Marketing Coach (or in this instance Keyword Research Coach). This is sort of a hybrid between the retail price, full-service option and the go-it-alone, time consuming do-it-yourself option.

Small business marketing and achieving the search engine ranking for your chosen keywords doesn't have to be difficult or expensive, if you start with solid keyword research. And if performed correctly, the end results will be keywords that work for your business.

Anyone who wants to drive traffic to their blog or Website needs to understand the basics of keyword research. It is not just about selecting a few keywords, using them in your Website name and then having traffic start flowing to your Website.

There is need for you to do a thorough and prolonged keyword research in order to evaluate the campaign of your competitors, creating a list of keywords for the niche of your choice and discovering new niches or even the product of your choice.

As someone who is into these, I must tell you that keyword research takes a lot of time but it is worth it!  Without a Keyword Research technique and strategy to follow you will never get the targeted traffic volume  for your Internet business, niche or campaign. It is hard to do on your own,. With no experience it can be even harder. But if you use a keyword research tool, you are assured of getting your result in a fast manner and most importantly you will get the targeted and less competitive in the niche of your choice.

All over the Internet, there are varieties of Free and paid for  keyword research tool, some of them are:

  • Keyword Elite,
  • Micro Niche Finder
  • or even HitTail, etc.

But the question here is: are the paid ones worth your hard earned money and will the free ones do a good enough job?

The fact is that people just starting out get it all backwards. They think that they can get by with a free keyword research tool "Until they Learn the ropes". The problem with this is that the keyword research is the foundation of your business. That is exactly where you need to invest time and money. Once you learn the ropes AND become and expert you will realize that not using the tools is a waste of time and future earnings.

BUT Investing your money into some keyword research tool can be a waste of money and time if you have not done the background work first (No there is no magic bullet. No one can do everything for you):
1) Have you identified your niche market? – one size does not fit all if you want quality traffic!
2) Have you identified what your blog's or Website's purpose is in that market?
3) Do you know why people will come to your Website?
4) Do you know what lingo people use when talking about your niche market?
5) .Do you know how you want to monetize (make money off) of you market?
6) Do you know what kind of content you will create for your blog (written, video, robot generated, RSS Feeds, etc)?

Once you can answer these questions you will have the basic focus for your blog to start to learn how to keyword research techniques.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you use a keyword Research System like Keyword Research Pro. Click on this link to see all the things it will help you do automatically. Click on this link to buy Keyword Research Pro and start using it today.

Like I said you can go right to Google and use there keyword analyzer tool (Click on this link to read an article we posted on The top FREE keyword tools out there)

No matter if you choose a paid for keyword research software system like keyword research Pro or choose to use a combination of free tools and experience and time, the fact is that  you need to do one or the other! If you are into article marketing, Pay Per Click advertising, AdSense or SEO or even affiliate marketing, you need this software in order to increase your web traffic and  skyrocket your earning.

OK lets talk specifically about HOW TO Keyword research techniques: and Strategies

STEP 1) Do they background Niche Market Research!

Assuming you are into marketing a niche about an acne product.
you have researched the market by doing Google searches and going to competitor websites. At least a dozen.

you have read their articles and clicked on some of the advertisements to see what is being sold in the marketplace.
You have watched some of the acne HOW TO videos and understand what people talk about when talking about acne products.

And you have decided that you want to focus your site on "Acne Cures"

GREAT! You have done the background necessary to start your keyword research process!

Step 2) Start to do the keyword research technique

Let's say you want perform a keyword research search using the keyword "cure acne".

Most people will just plug in the keyword "cure acne" in the search box for the keyword . As someone who is very experienced in this, the best way to get the top keywords out of this is to simply plug in the keyword "acne" in the search box. It will return similar keywords that pertains to acne both relevant and irrelevant ones.

You should keep a pen and paper by your side for this. Glance through the result of the acne and select the words that pertain to curing acne like cure acne, treat acne, stop acne, fight acne, acne remedy, acne relieve, deal with acne, overcome acne and acne help etc.

These keywords listed above are the keywords for solving a problem, avoid keywords like symptoms of acne, causes of acne etc. Though they are useful, as you are marketing a product about the remedy of a disease it is better to be more targeted here. Still plug the keywords I listed above.

If you continue plugging the keywords and searching them you will end up getting long tail keywords (this is a list of keywords that go from most common to least common,. the least common ones are the "tail" of the list. But they often add a lot of traffic to your Website because there is little competition for them,.

Step3) Without an advanced tool your choices are limited where you go from here

It is a good idea to manually bounce your list of keywords off some other search engine besides Google.
This will refine the list a little,.

Check Google adwords and look at competition for pay per click keyword terms. this is a must if you plan to do pay per click advertising. it also gives a hint as to keyword usage by your competition

Also use a combination of the 5 free tools listed in the article mentioned at the start of this article to get a feel for current keyword usage vs older keyword usage. This will help you spot emerging trends. This is a GREAT way to get some keywords with low competition that are just becoming popular.

For example, today is may 4th 2010, and if your Website focused on the oil industry then adding the keywords "dome" or "Oil dome" might be a good way to get some traffic that would have been meaningless a few weeks ago (this is due to BP's efforts to decrease the amount of oil leaking into the gulf of Mexico from a massive oil well bow out by constructing a dome to place under the ocean over the well).

Step4) Plan how you will use your Keywords

The final step of your strategy is implementing it! Many people fail on this last step.
  • DO NOT try to put all your keywords in every article!
  • DO make sure that you main page has a description the defines the niche with the core keywords'
  • Do make sure that you focus each article on one or two keyword phrases.
  • Do make sure that those keywords are in the title and description.
  • Do make sure that you use them through out the article where it makes sense
  • DO NOT use them so much that the article is a pain to read. The Search engines will not be fooled.
  • Do add more the one article per keyword phrase
  • DO group the articles by keyword phrase within categorizes that contain the keyword in the name
  • DO link to the other articles from within articles where it makes sense.
  • DO use the keyword statistics plugin in wordpress and learn how to use it
  • Do use the All in one SEO plugin in wordpress and learn how it worked
  • DO use relevant article tags with the keywords in them
  • Do keep the content original
  • Do add more content on a regular basis
  • Do continue to check the keyword tools for more fresh ideas every once in a while!

.

Great how to do Keyword Research and SEO beginers Video!

OK here is a really great video about Keyword research, seo and basic web SEO.

I really like this as a beginner video as it is clear and to the point.
It starts off by telling you why SEO, and Keyword research is important. It also defines the terms it uses so if you are new to this it isn't a confusing waste of time.

Worth noting is that he shows about 4 different free tools for doing keyword research> but note that, even with all these tools, he just scratches the surface when it comes to keyword research, analysis and SEO for a niche market, especially when compared to a quality keyword research software system. Hey you get what you pay for right?

You can do it his way, hopping from free tool to free tool and do half of the analysis you really need, or you can by a keyword software tool like Keyword Research Pro, and do all of it, everything you need and twice as much as your competitors who only use the skimpy free tools, do.

Here is a link to an article that gives you the major features of the latest version of Keyword research pro. I guarantee you it does thing to optimize your keyword strategy for driving traffic to your blog or website that you never thought of before. check it out at: Keyword Research Pro NEW Release

It also goes over a lot of other basics. Like what html tags are important to the search engines and which aren't.

This guy is clear, concise and spot on when it comes to keyword research and optimizing your website for the search engines.

But Remember this is an introductory video and does not go very deep into a lot of the subjects.

But it DOES give you some action items that you can implement right away to get going on how to do keyword research and how to optimize your blog for the search engine (SEO = Search Engine Optimization)

Keyword Research and SEO video tutorial!

OK Here is a great beginners guide to SEO in a video tutorial form. Once again, I always recommend that everyone read and watch everything they can on SEO, keyword research, keyword analysis, niche markets and SEO!

But this SEO video is really good. It covers all of the basics from defining just what the heck Search Engine Optimization is, what "Organic Results" are, what is meant by Keyword Research, Pay per Click, Competitor analysis, etc.

Now that I think about it, so many people just think that Keyword Analysis is just keyword research. Take all the hoopla around the  Google wonder wheel. Heck, thats just brain storming. And most peoples Keyword Research will just get them keywords that hopefully are representative of search terms that people use when searching for products or information in their Niche Market.

But what about your competition? Yes, you may find a keyword with 1.5 million searches a month. but how many Website are competing for search engine ranking on that one Keyword term? What are your chances with a new Website, of ever seeing the first page of Google for that term?

That is why this video on Search Engine Optimization so good. It gets down to basics like this, and I love to say this line, "But wait, Theres more"

It tells you all of the following as well:, on page & off page optimization, Meta tags, header tags, keyword density, URLs, site maps, xml site maps, google webmaster tools, link development, directory submission, local directories, online yellow pages, one-way links, two-way links, three-way links, article submission, rss feed distribution, blog submission, and online press release optimization.

What is the best seo/Keyword Research software?

"A reader has asked:I'd really like some keyword/SEO software that kind of automates stuff and makes the whole keyword thing simple. i hear wordtracker is great. but in your opinion, whats the must-have keyword-selecting software (or site)?"

I have talked at length about Keyword Selection tools vs Keyword Software Systems in the past And I will try to some up the differences in whats out there for you and anyone else who is interested in obtaining better traffic thru the search engines.

Here are my top nuggets when it comes to Keyword Analysis, Keyword software, SEO and targeted traffic:

1) Before getting caught up on keywords, understand your market, where you fit in that market, what you want to do in that market, the terminology of that market, your competitors in that market and the realities of ecommerce/affiliate marketing in that market. If you fail to take the time to do this step then you will never have a focused plan for your blog or web business and your success will be greatly limited.

2) After writing down the answers to the question in 1 (along with your Business Plan for what your goals are and how you want to try to achieve those goals) you can start looking into the wonderful world of SEO and Keywords. To Start you can browse are many many articles on the subject at: http://www.keywordsoftwareguide.com/category/keywords-software-articles.

To make it easy I will give yon some basic KEYWORD LAWS (according to me anyhow):

1) Researching Keywords with a free tool Like wordtracker or google adwords or whatever is NOT ENOUGH!  If you are serious bout this then you need to invest $50-$100 (you don't need to spend more IMO) on a high quality Keyword Software Toll like Keyword Research Pro.

2) Keyword Research is not enough because it is more then just finding keywords for your niche. you need to analyze what keywords your competitors are using, you need to understand the competition for the keywords and how often they are used by ALL the major search engines – not just google. Keyword Research Pro Software will help you with all this and a dozen more critical things.

3) You need to not just analyze the "best" keywords but you need to analyze how they are searched for in phrases so you can use those phrase. 90% of your competitors are just going to try to find the quick top 3 keywords using wordtracker or google or something and try to compete for those words. LET THEM!

4) While they all try to get ranked for the top 3 words you do the research for phrases and long tailed keywords that everyone else is ignoring so your pages can get rankled as #1 in google for those terms. Again Keyword Research Pro will do this analysis for you in MINUTES not days. So will some of the more expensive packages.

5) Using Google, wordtracker or even google wonder wheel (puke) is OK for brainstorming if you want to but it is only a small part of the keyword research and analysis stage.

6) Then you need to learn about all the places on your Website that you can use those keywords. yes there are many more places then just in the articles or in the websites Keywords meta tag. How about with the pictures? How about in the headings, in the file location names and etc. To find out more on this read some of the articles in the link I mentioned above.

7) Once you have your site up and running use one of the many free Website analysis tools like Google webmaster to analyze where you are ranking for what Keywords. This is ESSENTIAL. You did all the work to understand your market and where you fit in it and your business plan to take a piece of it, You did all the work (allot faster and easier with Keyword Research PRO but still a lot of work) to find the terms and phrases, and then you did all the work to site the articles and implant the keywords and phrases and now you are just going to sit back and wonder why the traffics not coming???

8) NO! Be smart, use a tool that analyses the traffic to your Website and what terms you rank on what pages for on various search engines and then do the analysis to determine why certain phrase or keywords are not working for you! Again Google analytics and google webmaster are free and a great place to start!!

I could go on and on but this is plenty to start with. Again you can go to the section of our Website that is dedicated to FREE high quality, Keyword Research and SEO articles and get all the information you need on this subject!!

Niche Domination- How To Do Keyword Research

Keyword Research is the cornerstone of a Niche Market Strategy. Even with great keyword software (like Keyword Software Pro) you need to understand the concept of Niche's and why keyword selection and a well thought out keyword strategy are the key to Niche Domination. In plain english, Keyword research is just the start but it is the foundation! if you want to have a website that is focused on a specific topic (a Niche) and you want toget people to come to your website more then other peoples websites, then they have to be able to find your website.

Now there are several ways for people to find your website. They can get there from social bookmarking (where they read about your website on places like Digg or Facebook), They can get thjeir from other blogs or Forums, etc. But most commonly people just type in the term they are looking for into a dearch engine like Google or Yahoo and click from the list of sites that come up.

The few words that people type into search engines are called Key Words. If you want these people to find your website then the search engines have to have your website ranked high enough so that  you come up on that list of sites that they show the person typing in the keywords.

In order to have YOUR websiite ranked highly in the search engine you need to understand the Niche Market well enopugh that you understand what people will type in when they want to get information or products from that niche market. That is what this Keyword Research video is about.

Oh but if it keyword research were only that easy! The problem is that your competitors (every other website focused on that same niche market) is trying to do the same keyword research  thing! And then they are trying to understand the entire process so that their keywoprds are well represented in their content and so that their website and pages have the right Meta Tags (special code that tells the search engines what the site is about, what KeyWords you use, etc) That is why you need great Keyword Software to help you.
