At this point I am no longer recommending Keyword Magic Professional and am Recommending Keyword Elite 2.0. Here is why:

In the last year or so a number of  mid priced Keyword research tools have stopped working. A few of the bigger names included:

1) Keyword Research Pro and

2) Keyword Magic Professional

3) and several others

These were both mid priced products that did a great job.

BUT the owners did not want to keep up with the maintenance and rewriting that you have to do to keep up with google etc.

Ok I first began using Keyword Magic Professional almost a year ago. Here is the startling results of my efforts:

1. I have a website with a Keyword phrase I selected using Keyword Magic Professional.
2. This phrase has over 600,000 monthly searches.
3. It has over 60,000,000 results when you search on it in Google.
4. And I am in the number 2 position!!!

But the fact is 95% of the people out there don’t need all the extra functionality. And at $47 you’re not paying for all the extras anyhow.

2)      Keyword Magic Pro had a few minor glitches – but I have not seen them since the rewrite.

Basically I have had times where it does not return a keyword list after I have been out of it for a while. But all I do is restart it and the problem goes away.

Proof 1)      How I used Keyword Magic Professional to get a Blog post on the first page of Google for a keyword with 10,000 searches a month, in just 2 weeks.

OK, I started out brainstorming for a website of mine Http://Wordpress-how-to-wp.com. This, as the name implies, is a website about how to use wordpress to create a blog and gives advice for all things wordpress related.

I went into Keyword Magic Professional and started doing “brainstorming Searches” by putting in the words “Wordpress” or “WP How”, and then letting it spit back a list of keyword phrases.

I selected the Normal Search setting(as opposed to an exact phrase search or an exact phrase all in title search setting) so it would give me keyword phrases related to what I entered not exactly what I entered.

When I entered the term WP Plugin I saw some terms that looked interesting. They had enough monthly searches (over 1000 for me, Sometimes I will go for only a few hundred monthly searches if it is a quick article to write and little competition) to make it worth my while

So I select them all and clicked on the “ Get Competition Data” And this is exactly what I got (you can validate this with Google if you want but you won’t get the R/S ratio from Google…the price you pay for using a free tool is lack of critical information):

What caught my attention was the Keyword Phrase “WP TinyMCE”. Now WP TinyMCE is the editor for wordpress and can be a pain in the butt so it is a good thing to write an article about (OK remember, it helps to know your Niche). I could have checked out Premium WP Themes as well but I went for WP Tiny MCE.

WP Tinymce had 9900 searches a month with a low R/S and only 319,000 pages in Google to contend with as potential (note that’s only the potential competition for that keyword).

And now here is the big secret, I am not competing with the 319,000 pages that mention WP TinyMCE. I am competing with the ones that have that in their title, exactly. Because I am going to have it in my article title exactly.

So I then went into the Settings tab and selected the “allintitle” search setting again and reran the query and this is what I saw and it blew me away:

There was so little competition for the Keyword in the title (relative to the amount of searches) that it had NO R/S ratio! Damn!

So I wrote an article with the title simply called WP TinyMCE

OK Proof number 2) How I got a new website to the number 2 position of Google with a 60,000,000 competition (broad) Phrase using Keyword Magic Pro:

1)      I did exactly what I did to find the term WP TinyMCE except I did it looking for terms to do with "Cooking".

2)      I did some research and decided I wanted a generic website on "how to cook"..

AND most importantly to you, this means that Google will return your web page higher up in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS) in response to a users query for that keyword!

So LSI is a method for indexing a website that Google uses that is often referred to as LSI Keywords.  Search engines use this  to analyze the keywords and content of websites to derive the true content and focus of the websites rather then just relying on a list of keywords that are populated thru out a website.

LSI Keywords – why do the search engines care about this?

This is part of the evolution of Search Engines Algorithms as they try and return the best website for a users keyword search in a search engine.

Many years ago people would try to put the best keywords possible in the Keyword Meta Tag field and that helped get ranking> Then that was quickly abused and search engines no longer trusted that solely. Remember people only use a search engine if it will give them the information they want. If you search on dogs and the search engines kept bringing back porno or spam sites you would quickly switch to another search engine. So the search engines want to find the best sites possible for the keywords you are searching for.

As the web evolved the search engines moved to looking for the keyword in the heading tags and in the body but again people quickly moved to "Keyword Stuffing" and all kinds of keyword games to fake out the search engines.

So now the search engines like Google are using Latent Semantics Indexing to try to analyze the keywords and synonyms on a page to determine if the content truly relates to the keywords and then the Search Engines Index the page according to the result!

You are doing On Page SEO When

I have never used this one and when I tried it would never accept the Captcha (the squiggly words in the little box that you have to enter – it is supposed to be a protection against spam).  They note that if you make an account then you would not have to enter the captcha.

Sounds like bullshit to me and the captcha doesn’t work on purpose so you are forced to create an account in order to use it. I am a huge fan of the Keyword Statistics Plugin.

BUT there is a problem with the Keyword Statistics plugin:

-> When you have long post or articles, over 1000 words it can suddenly slow down your editing.

There are some symptoms. You may notice one or more of these symptoms:

1) You get an error saying a script has not finished do you want to keep trying?

2) Your editing gets slow and it takes a while to move from line to line

3) Your screen may blink every 5 seconds.

AND there is an easy fix for the Keyword Statistics Plugin Long Posts:

1) Click on the Keyword Statistics link in the SETTINGS tab down the left side of your admin panel towards the bottom.

2) Click on Keyword Density Checker link (there are 4 or 5 settings you can adjust).

3) Change the automatic update to 10 (seconds)

4) Unclick the 3 keyword phrases (this will make it so the Keyword Statistics plugin no longer tells you the keyword density for 3 word keyword phrases. If you need this you can go in and set this on and off whenever you want. Leave it off unless you want to look at 3 word keyword phrase density).

5) Click the Update button at the bottom and go back to work!

You WILL NOT get good Keyword Selection help by using the Free Google Keyword Tool.

Don't get me wrong IT WILL give you all the possible related keywords (assuming you create a google account and sign in. Otherwise it only gives you 50 or 100 of what may be a list of 800 related keywords).

BUT it won't tell you which ones are the best ones to use!

The competition number it gives is missleading. That number  (or bar graph) IS NOT how many people are using the keyword that you have to compete with to get ranked like many people think It is how many poeple are competing for that Keyword in Adwords! Before using keywords for your site, it is always better to check for the popularity of these sub theme keywords. Some or all of the tools mentioned in the keywords tools section could be utilized to measure the popularity of these keywords.

Based on the popularity count of these tools we should come up with a descending order listing of our most unused but good key phrase. These are our good target keywords. As the competition increases on the keywords, deeper optimization then just building keyword specific pages will have to be done.

Variations on sub- theme words: This is the word- play to get into the mind of the user.

Now our set of 25 to 30 keywords will be expanded to include singular-plural word combinations, juxtaposing the same words in a different combination, using synonyms, building on the list of words using Thesaurus & a good dictionary.

The ideal set of keywords/ key phrases is to come up with around 70-100 possible ways of looking for that web site on the search engines (our keyphrases)

Research on these variations of the sub theme keywords for actually combing up with the combinations that are relatively un optimized for yet popular.
At the end of this exercise we will have the ranked list of keywords, which we can start optimizing for.

General observations & other nuggets:

When using google to check for the competing pages through the SERP house the keyphrase in quotes. This will do the exact phrase searching for the phrase that we are optimizing for. Now to have a real feel of the actual competition on this phrase use the adword tool.

Typically offline competition for the business & online competition are not equivalent. The client needs to be driven out of this mindset. Online the competition for us depends on the key-phrases that we choose rather then the industry or the competition chosen keywords.

Another useful tip is to watch out for the ranking of the subpages on the SERPS page.

A higher occurenec of a sub- page suggests a lesser competitive key- phrase.

Keep excel sheets handy to work out on your key words

Here is a benchmark:
If the site is fairly well optimized, and has a focused theme, then the combined total number of visitors from secondary variations of the main keyword phrase, should be higher than the number of visitors from your main phrase by itself.

Another yardstick can be that 20% of your search traffic reach you through your primary theme words. Another 20% through the sub theme words & their combos & the remaining 60% is fractional. A true pyramid.

Keep the keyword density on your pages in between 5-20% while optimizing.
The latest talking optimization based on keywords is that almost none of the things mentioned above might apply as it is. You create text based on the end user perspective & optimize for 5-6 keywords per page. Check your referrer stats & fine tune optimization.

Free Keyword Tools:

The first tool that can be used is Overture.

One trick is to check the keywords on all the Overture tools, US, UK, DE, FR and even JP. You would be surprised at the ideas you can come up with on the other O Tools that do not appear on the US one. Also, the de-pluralizing and match-drive-alphabetization some times does not appear on the other tools.
Second tool of course is the word tracker.

Use Google adwords to check on the competition for the chosen phrases using the CPC barometer. Higher the CPC more the competition.

Question by Joseph Ponnou: How accurate and reliable are statistics from keyword research tools?

My supposed "niche" 'new online income opportunity' had a 24-hr search result of 580 according to a very popular keyword research tool when I started optimizing it. For the past 4 months, it has been fluctuating between 450 to 650 which is fine.

Now, for the past 1 week or so, I find that there are "zero" searches being shown in the 24-hr count. On the contrary, my own website is recording more than 100 hits per day through Google organic search itself.

Likewise another of my keyword 'where is dubai' that is drawing a traffic of average 150 visits per day through Google organic search has a total search of 20 per day according to this super tool.

Any comments?

I thought I was pretty good in using such tools, but now I wonder if I know to use them at all. For how can such well reckoned and vastly used research tools be wrong?

I am not aware of any keyword research tools that are "very accurate," and at best they tend to be "somewhat helpful."

There are several issues here. First, no tool is more reliable than the data it is "fed," and neither Google nor Yahoo provide their search data to third parties. WordTracker uses data from a pool of smaller search engine sites, and often shows high traffic levels for very bizarre search phrases. (In my experience, WordTracker's data includes "fake traffic" including traffic from other keyword-research bots.)

In addition, even your own data is not complete: you may find that your bidding draws 150 impressions per day for searches for "where dubai" but in fact, your ad might not be shown for 1,000 other searches done each day. (Your data may also be "over-inclusive," as you may be including searches through the Search Network, which aren't done at Google, or traffic on the Content Network).

Second, search patterns change over time; the number of searches for "Santa Claus' address" rises in December and probably zeroes out from January to October. In addition to predictable seasons like that, there are random fluctuations as well as "surges" (when Jay Leno mentions widgets, there may be a bunch of web searches in the next 24 hours).

There are also "cycles" for certain search terms. For example, searches for "porn" peak on weekends (Friday and Saturday night), while searches for "football scores" peak on Sunday and Monday. For some search terms, it's possible that 80% to 90% of the total searches occur on a single day each week ("lotto numbers"), or even a single day each month or each quarter ("Fed interest rate change").

Another crucial factor to consider is the activity of "fraud operators," who use keyword research tools to identify high-bid keywords; when bid amounts rise, those terms attract more fraudulent activity (because fraudsters can make more money from each click than for low-bid terms), increasing volume.

The bottom line is that you should absolutely NEVER rely on any tools to be reliable — not even within an "order of magnitude" — in predicting search volumes for specific keywords or even "keyword families."

Mark Says "Never rely on any tools to be reliable". Then what does he use a guess? I have studied a lot of the tools and found that YES the data DOES fluctuate. But that does NOT make the tools innacurate in most cases. It Usually means that people ASSUME that 3000 searches a month means 100 a day.

But really, so what? If the searches come in spurts you still get the searches.
AND if the search patterns change then they change. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THE KEYWORD TOOL WAS INNACURATE OR WRONG! It means that the INternet is a dynamic place. Things change because people change.

It is up to the user of the tool to continually monitor his market niche and change his focus to keep up with the markets rapid changes.And to

do that you need a quality Keyword Tool. As well as a suite of other tools.

Owning a good keyword research tool is being serious about internet marketing. If you are just playing and dipping your toe in the water to check the temperature, OK. But you will never make any money that way, at least no more than a dinner and movie might cost you. But if you are looking to make a living, you will never compete with the marketers who are already experiencing success in their niches. They have already learned their lesson. Free ain't really free. There is a price to pay for being cheap and skimping on your keyword research. That price is losing profitable spots on the front page of Google by the people who own a 0 tool and are beating your pants offs at will. Information is king and his sword is a good keywords research tool.

Keywords research tools come in many forms and you can pull your hair out trying to figure out which one is for you. At some point in your search you will have to trust someone and decide to buy one. Until you do, you are no more tan a hobbyist. However, I doubt that is why you are reading this article and if you are still reading at this point, maybe you already know it is time to get serious or get to finding you a new hobby.
